Deferred? You still have a chance

Don't give up hope; there are still many things you can do if you have not done them already.

Tip #1: Read the school-specific instructions carefully.
Some schools explicitly state that deferred students should NOT submit any additional information. If that is the case for you, do not submit anything else. Ignoring the instructions can hurt your chances during the regular round. Some schools will also request specific materials that others don't.

Tip #2: Have your counselor make a call to the Admissions Office.
Unless the college states otherwise, having your counselor make a call is a great idea. They can get insight on why you were deferred and what else you can do. Admissions officers tend to be more candid with guidance counselors than if they were speaking to you directly.

Tip #3: Send a deferral letter.
You should send a letter to let the school know that they are still your top choice, and that you will attend if admitted in the regular round. In the first part of the letter, show your continued interest in the school and reiterate the reasons why it is still your first choice. The second part of the letter should include academic and extracurricular updates. Remember to be enthusiastic, sincere and positive in the letter.

Tip #4: Send additional materials.
You should definitely send your mid-year grades. Here are other things you should consider sending, if applicable, or include in your deferral letter:
-- New and improved standardized test scores
-- New honors or awards
-- New leadership positions in your extracurricular activities.
-- Additional letters of recommendation (only if very strong)

Tip #5: Consider visiting the school to show demonstrated interest if you have not visited before.
